Whirlwind Week

Hi! Thank goodness I was able to finally squeeze some blogging time on my uber hectic schedule. Sooooo much things happened last week! From the org recruitment week, to the two consecutive events we held, to my grandmom’s 75th Birthday celebration and thesis research in between. I guess you could say hello to a familiar friend of mine, she’s staying under my eyes for some time now.

Last Thursday we held our Marketing Welcoming Mass at the UST Santissimo Rosario Parish, but we often call it the UST Chapel. Welcoming Masses are usually held by major organizations to open the academic year in Spirit of our Lord. As we all know, UST is a Catholic university and so, holding masses is a tradition among us. A pretty good number of Marketing students attended and the classes who are assigned to offer are also present! Kudos to these active members! We do hope that this will be a good start of the school year ahead of us.

This year gave birth to a new annual event of the USTJMA, the Freshmen Orientation. And last Saturday, the pioneer event was entitled, “Activate Enthusiasm!” The org, with the recommendation of the administration, decided to give a head start on our freshies and even their parents on what they must ought to know in the college of Commerce and the Marketing department. In here, Sir Riaz Benjamin, the newly appointed Marketing Chair, discussed all the program offerings, retention policy (just in case you failed three subjects, yikes!) and other FAQs.

We’ve got Marketing Dance Company x Pax Romana Dance Troupe to do some grooves (and kilig moves), plus our amaaazing sponsors, Pocari Sweat and Gardenia Cream Roll! Those who didn’t attended sadly missed these, and our free exclusive USTJMA fans and FRESH Fragrance Bar privilege card for everyone. :) I’m pretty sure that their effort to come on a no-class day to school is all worth it! So you lazy students, better be present on our next events ’cause you’ll never know what we’ll be giving away next!

In the end, even though we didn’t reached our target audience number, the whole program flow went smoothly. The tech people, (kudos to Anna and Steph) are just as fast as my next slip of tongue. The registration people were very organized and welcoming to the parents and students, the ushers, and most especially, hands  down to our Marketing officer, Denise for having these very generous event partner! Freshmen Orientation would be this awesome without the help of these people, and being the Project Head of this event, I’m deeply thankful for their support and cooperation.

Couple of words to leave for the freshies: Just enjoy college. Yes, it isn’t as easy as high school but know how to balance the work and fun. And your USTJMA is here to play part in that FUN. And for those who keep saying that Marketing is the easiest major in the college or that petiks lang sa Marketing (happy go lucky in Marketing), I’m telling you ITS NOT. If we fourth year people could just show to you what we’ve been through, and what we’re still going to do. Haaay. You know, its just that Marketing students doesn’t have any concrete thing to do like computing on calculators or analyzing graphs or memorizing the Labor Law, in Marketing we just make NOISE. Yes, exactly because that’s what we really do in the corporate world; we create noise. In conceptualizing advertisements, sales strategy and and the likes. We don’t have one single work. That’s why its easy for people to see that we’re not doing much because most of our work and outputs deal with creativity, concepts and a looot of paperworks. But we don’t mind it, because Marketers find so many interesting things that looks quite ordinary to common people. We know and see the difference in supermarkets, billboards, commercials, and even the packaging of a product. Its really fun. Proud Marketista here. :)

Last week was also the CBA Org fair. Its an annual week-long event wherein organizations get to recruit members for their apprentices, volleyball and basketball teams, and other committees. This year’s theme was Island Expedition. Each major and minor org were to assemble their booth in their island theme of choice, with gimmicks and games and really awesome props! Ours was called Ice Ice Baby, initially it was Frozen Island but it was too plain and we planned to add this polar bear mascot, hence that title. Some org booth props went as high as reaching the 4th floor lobby ceiling! That’s how ma-effort the Commerce business leaders were! For our org, we kept it with our “minimalist” concept. But we are particularly proud with our recruitment poster made by our very awesome VP for Productions, Anna! Cheers! Minimalist na minimalist pa rin! Its very straight forward and that’s how we exactly want it. :) Hopefully, we can accept applicants that can embody the vision and plans of the EOs and the organization as well.

So that’s it, org life is starting to rule my life at this point because I only have that to think about now. Why? becasue our professors are still in a no-show mode. Its getting bothersome though. I hope we can start our legit classes as soon as possible.

Til my next post! (Coming up)
